Product Review UPDATE

Remember my excitement about the tasty Eden Foods Sauerkraut?
Well thanks to my good on line friend Anna, I fired a quick email to the company for some information.
You see Anna had left me a comment that (as always) got me thinking. Anna has a knack of doing that. Thank you Anna.
I wanted to find out if their sauerkraut was raw.
If you've never sent an email to a company inquiring about their product, give it a try sometime. You usually get a response within a few hours and most companies are genuinly happy you contacted them.
Below the correspondence with Eden Foods:

Dear Marc,
Thank you for contacting Eden Foods and your interest in Eden products.
The Eden Organic Sauerkraut is a pasteurized product so yes there is heat applied. If you should have any further questions, please contact Customer Service.
Sincerely,

Greetings,

Thank you for all your great products.
I recently bought some of your Sauerkraut.
I was really pleased with it. I was curious if the product is “raw”. Or is it cooked in any way?
Thank you in advance.

Marc

No where on the jar does it say pasteurized. Buyer beware as always folks.
So much to my dissapointment, the sauerkraut is after all pasturized ;-(
Which of course destroys the good stuff. Back to making my own at home.

That's strange. I was wondering if maybe they pasteurized it for health code reasons, but I think that a lot of the kimchi sold locally in NYC is not pasteurized. At least, it pops when you open it, and it's fizzy on the tongue. I'll investigate. In the meantime can you post your recipe for making your own?

I don't think it requires it for health code reasons....but it's probably safer for them to do, just in case.
NYC......ahhhhhh how I miss my food city ;-)

I will do a post on how I make my own. Thanks for the post idea ;-)

Check out Bubbies.com. Here in Seattle we can get this sauerkraut, which is excellent and according to the label has abundant live cultures. You find it in the refrigerated section so that may mean it is raw. The only ingredients are cabbage, artesian well water, salt. YUM.

It's good to know it. Thanks!

I suppose that sauerkraut is also a source of biogenic amines, such as tyramine, which may cause adverse reactions in sensitive people

Yes, it is quite a bit of work trying to find out what we are really eating. As soon as I can get to the store, I'm going to get some cauliflower and other veggies to ferment. I did this back in the summer, but I feel much more confident about it now. I've been eating DEAD sauerkraut!

Oh drat. I too read the whole label. Twice. And all their online material. Nowhere does it say pasteurized. Drat.

Eden has now updated their website with a very detailed explanation of what they do to their sauerkraut and why. Here's the link: http://www.edenfoods.com/faqs/view.php?categories_id=6. Hope it helps!

You're ahead of your time! Eden's Organic Sauerkraut just won the taste testing of sauerkrauts at Cook's Country magazine :)
